ABC Phonics Word Family Free: An App for Word Study
Summary : Do You Know Your Family’s Words?
ABC Phonics Word Family Free teaches users letter sounds and spelling. When first launching the app, users can register by tapping the “Users” button on the top of the screen and then selecting an avatar and entering their name. Next, users can choose the type of skill that they wish to engage, which includes short vowels, silent /e/ and long vowels, two vowels, and three letters and word families. After users select the skill, the app presents them with a partial spelling of a word, a picture of the word partially spelled, and a four-letter bank. Based on the information provided, users are to pick the letter from the bank that will correctly spell the word. After completing those exercises, users are presented a matching exercise in which they have to pair the words that they spelled in the previous exercise with their images. In both exercises, users must answer correctly or they will not be able to proceed to the next question, and users are rewarded with a “Dinosaur Award” after they complete a skill. Lastly, the app shows users’ scores for each skill on its home screen.
Please note: Only a limited amount of skills can be accessed in the free version. Users need to purchase the full version to unlock the entire app’s content.
- As part of their classroom routine, teachers can set aside 10 minutes for students to complete a skill in this app. Teachers can track student performance by viewing their scores on the app’s home screen.
- After becoming familiar with the format of this app, teachers can have students create their own exercises modeled after the ones in this app. To do so, teachers would need to assign each student a skill, and students would have to recreate both types of exercises so they are aligned to the skill assigned to them. Using paper-and-pencil materials will make this exercise more interactive when students’ peers complete the exercises.
- After completing a word family activity, teachers can have students brainstorm additional words that belong to the word family. For example, the “-ab” word family in the app includes lab, tab, dab, and jab. Students can analyze those words and then add cab and nab to the list. Students can work in groups to generate as many ideas as possible.
- After learning a word family using this app, students can demonstrate their learning using the Popplet or Lekh Diagram apps. With those apps, students can arrange the words on the apps in a way that shows their connectedness. Plus, users can add images too.
