Brainy Quotes: A Database of Sayings at Your Disposal

Brainy Quotes is a comprehensive database of quotes and sayings. After launching the website, users can search for quotes by Topics, Authors, or current events. Plus, users can always enter a keyword into the search box and locate quotes that way. In addition, users can click the “Quote of the Day” and the “Pictures” options on the top of the screen to view quotes set against background images.
When users locate a quote of interest, they can click the person’s name who said the quote. The website will then load additional quotes uttered by the same person. Users can then share the quotes via social media or click the “Heart” icon to save them. (Please note, if saving quotes, users will need to create a free account. By creating an account, users will also be able to create “Quote” sets.) Finally, when users view a quote, they can read the keywords used to log the quote. If interested, users can click those keywords to view additional quotes related to them.
Instructional Ideas for Brainy Quotes
- At the beginning of a class, teachers can project a quote for their students to read. Next, teachers can have students respond to the quote by asking: (1) What does the quote mean to you?, (2) What do you think the individual was trying to express by saying the quote?, and (3) How does the quote relate to the keywords? Students can respond in writing or orally.
- When do a biographic project, students can use this website to search for quotes said by the individual whom they are studying. Teachers can then require students to use one or more of the quotes in their project.
- Teachers can have students choose a quote from this website and then use an art producing piece of edtech, such as Canva or Google Drawing among others, to represent the meaning of the quote graphically. Students can then share their work by posting it to a class website or a Padlet.
- Teachers can have students pick a keyword and view the keywords connected to it. Next, teachers can have students read the quotes and, to conclude the activity, write a quote they think relates to the keyword and the other quotes connected to it. In a class discussion, teachers can then have students share their keywords and quotes.
