When users read a text, they can share it using the app’s email feature, bookmark it as a favorite, or add it to their bookshelf. By making it a favorite or adding it to their bookshelf, users can easily access the same text again by tapping the “bookshelf” icon on the bottom of the page. Additionally, users can tap the “grid” button on the bottom of the page to view different curations, or tap the “magnifying glass” to search using keywords.

Instructional Ideas

  1. When studying British Literature from the 19th century, teachers can assign each student or a small group of students a text from this app to research. To complete the research, students will have to read excerpts from the text, study the author, and discover the historical and/or literary significance of the text. Then, using a presentation app such as Prezi or Haiku Deck, students will have to create a research presentation about their text and post it to a class website. To add an additional layer, classmates will have to view the presentation and write three things they learned from the presentation, two questions they have about the text, and a one-sentence summary of the presentation.
  2. Teachers can select an excerpt from a text in this app and have students read it individually, in small groups, or as a whole class. Next, teachers can require students to critique the excerpt by stating what they liked and/or did not like about it. To ensure that students read it, teachers can require students to compose a brief (50–75 words) summary of the excerpt.
  3. Students can compare and contrast modern versions of texts against their original versions using this app. For example, students can peruse this app for texts that have been modified from their original form for contemporary times, such as Frankenstein and Robinson Crusoe. Once students find an original text in this app, they can go to their local and/or school library and checkout the modern version of it. Then, students can complete a Venn diagram or compose an explanation that compares the texts. Some points of comparison to consider including are the language, illustrations, style of print, and length of the texts.
