FriendStrip Kids Pro allows users to become the stars in their own comic strip. After launching and registering with the app, users select a comic strip. Each comic strip contains multiple frames that users personalize by adding pictures of themselves and modifying the text. To begin, users first select the comic strip and then the frame they wish to customize. Users tap the “Camera” button to take and add pictures. Users tap the “Pencil” button to change the text. When satisfied with their comic strip, users can tap the “Share” button to save their work to their camera roll or send it out over email or social media.

Please Note: This app had some bugs at the time of review, which related to taking and adding pictures to comic strips. However, the app was still very usable.

Instructional Ideas

  1. As an extension activity, teachers can have students use this app to customize a comic strip to their liking. When finished, students can email the comic strip to their teacher or post it to a class website.
  2. Teachers can have students create comic strips as a homework assignment and then share them in small groups the next day in class. Students can read each other their comic strips. After a comic strip has been read, students can talk about what they liked, their favorite parts, and any ideas for improvement.
  3. After teachers have students create and post their comic strips to a class website, teachers can allow other students to rewrite the end of the comic strip to their liking and post the new ending as a comment in response to the original post. Students can then read the new endings and post responses to them.
  4. After students become familiar with making comic strips using this app, they can choose a comic strip they made using this app and recreate it as a paper-and-pencil comic strip. Next, students can compare the pros and cons for making a digital vs. paper-and-pencil comic strip. Students can compose a paragraph that explains their preference.
  5. When modifying a comic strip, teachers can have students change the words so they are in a foreign language.
