Instructional Ideas

  1. As a bell ringer activity, teachers can project the daily quote from this app and have students compose a response to it. To support student writing, teachers can ask them to explain what the quote means to them, if they have had an experience that the quote speaks to, and/or when in their life they think the quote would be most applicable. Students can write their journal using an Office app, so they can save it and email it to their teacher easily.
  2. After reading a quote of the day, students can click on the person’s name and read his/her Wikipedia page. Next, students can write a paragraph that explains why they think the person would have said the quote that the app published. Students can use evidence found on the Wikipedia page to support their responses.
  3. Once students have gained an understanding of the impact a quote can have and the characteristics of a meaningful quote, students can write their own quotes on construction paper. They can then share the quote with a classmate or in small groups, where they discuss the quote and its meaning. Teachers can then transition students to a whole class activity and have different students share their quotes. Finally, students give the teacher their quote and the teacher can display it in the classroom.
  4. If teachers use this app daily, they can log the different quotes by copying them down on paper or typing them into an Office app. After the teacher has collected more than 10 quotes, the teacher can present them all to the students. In response, students will have to select their favorite quote and write a paragraph that explains why the quote they selected is in fact their favorite.
