Upon selecting Reading Comprehension, users are able to choose a space-related passage to read. Following the reading of the passage, the user is presented with six text-related questions (4 multiple choice, 2 matching). Correctly answered questions will cause a smiley face to appear. A sad face appears if an answer is incorrect, and then the user has the ability to choose a different answer. Upon completion of all questions, an assessment report can be viewed by tapping the “Graph” button. Additionally, users can create their own lessons by composing their own passages and questions.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can use the Reading Comprehension Solar System app for a classroom activity in which a student reads a passage aloud to the whole class. Next, teachers can have each student individually answer the questions that accompany the passage. At the completion of the activity, students report their scores to the teacher. At the end of the lesson, the student with the highest score can receive a prize.
  2. Teachers can use the Reading Comprehension Solar System app to build comprehension skills and foster creativity. To do so, the teacher can pair students together and instruct them to create similar passages and assessments related to a specific topic using the Self-Created Lessons feature. Afterward, students can share their work with other groups by having them read the passage and answer the questions. Teachers can add a twist to this activity by requiring the students who are composing the passage and questions to research the topic and include a specific number of facts. For example, if the topic is birds, students would have to research birds and include at least three interesting facts about birds in their passage.
  3. Teachers can use the Reading Comprehension Solar System app as part of a stations-rotation class activity.  To do so, the teacher can instruct students to use this app independently, and following a rotation, the teacher can check student progress by tapping the “Graph” button on the “Reading Comprehension” page.
