Description: This app lesson develops students’ ability to discern historical patterns and analyze them for meaning.
Instructional Objective: Students will view a documentary about an important event from United States history and create a newspaper page about the event from the perspective of someone who witnessed it. Students will then pick a theme represented in the documentary and write a “change-over-time” analysis, which links the theme to a contemporary issue.
Step 1: Students will watch a documentary clip from the Ken Burns app.
Step 2: Students will write news articles to create a newspaper page from the perspective of an observer of the historical event illustrated in the documentary using Lifecards app.
Step 3: Students will pick a theme from the historical event explained in the documentary and find a contemporary article using Timeline that links with the historical event.
Step 4: Students will write a “change-over-time” analysis that explains how the theme they picked has evolved over the course of American history using the Microsoft Word app.
