Instructional Ideas

  1. When writing an essay about a specific topic or making an argument for or against a topic, students can use this website as a reference. Teachers will need to ensure students cite the website as a reference in their paper.
  2. Teachers can use this information to help students develop their web-searching skills. To do so, teachers can choose four statistics from this website and makeup one fake statistic. Next, teachers can project the different statistics. They can then direct students to a search engine and have them try to identify the valid statistics from the fake one. As they conduct their investigations, teachers can have students save the keywords they used while searching. After students have identified the valid and fake statistics, teachers can have students share the search terms and strategies they used to validate the statistics via class discussion or in small groups. In this way, students will learn by searching for information on the web and then reflecting on their experience.
  3. Students can peruse this website by topic and identify the most interesting statistic. They can then write a journal that explains why the topic interest them. The benefit of this assignment is that students will learn how to navigate this website, find specific information on it, and then explain the significance of that information.
