Perceptual Regions World Geography – App Lesson

Description: This app lesson develops students’ understanding of perceptual regions.

Instructional Objective: Students will illustrate and categorize their perceptions of the Northeast, South, West, and Midwest regions, and they will then contrast their interpretations and the states they included in each perceptual region with their peers before writing an analysis of their reasoning

Step 1: Students will use the My World Atlas-Lite app to view the United States on a map.

Step 2: Students will use Skitch to either take a picture of a map of the United States in the classroom, or download a map of the United States from the internet. Then, students will use different colors to annotate the map and outline the group of states they would include in each perceptual region.

Step 3: Students will then share their perceptual region maps with their peers through Edmodo, a course management system, or Padlet.com.

Step 4: Students will write two paragraphs using the Quip app. First, students will write a paragraph explaining their reasoning for including the states they did into each perceptual region, taking into account perceived culture, climate, environment, industry, geography, etc. Students will also write a paragraph comparing and contrasting their perceptual regions against their peers’ perceptual regions and share it with the teacher. The teacher will then lead a discussion on perceptual regions.
