My Fitness Pal: An App for Nutrition

Summary : Achieve and track your fitness goals with MyFitnessPal!

Calorie Countyer – MyFitnessPal is a robust tool for tracking users’ daily food choices, exercise routine, nutrition, weight progress, fitness goals, and more. Users begin by entering their height, weight, age, and health goals into MyFitnessPal. The app then crunches users’ information to create a customized fitness and nutrition plan for them, which includes specific target dates to achieve benchmark goals. Plus, MyFitnessPal provides users with features for tracking their progress that can be accessed by tapping the “Lined” button on the top left of the app. With the Diary feature, users input their meals, snacks, and water consumption. Then, for each item, users input as much calorie, fat, cholesterol, fiber, and other nutrition information they desire. In turn, MyFitnessPal calculates up-to-the-minute totals and their remaining caloric-intake allowance against users’ daily goals. The Blog feature offers users access to information pertaining to dieting and eating. The Nutrition feature shows users their calorie breakdown for the day and week, while the Progress feature displays a line graph illustrating users’ weight progress over time. Users can also update their goals under the corresponding tab, diet as a group with the Friends feature, message other users, and set fitness reminders.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can instruct students to enter their strength, cardio, weight, and nutrition goals into this app. Over the course of the semester, students can track their progress and create documents in Numbers based on their daily caloric intake and exercise progress, complete with graphs and calculations.
  2. Teachers can instruct students to utilize the apps listed under Apps and Devices that connect to MyFitnessPal, so they can link the multiple fitness apps with their MyFitnessPal account. With this linked information, users can monitor their fitness and eating habits, what factors motivated them, and when students were most active throughout the day. Plus, students can present this data to a class or teacher using the Keynote, HaikuDeck, or WPS Office app.
  3. After recording their eating habits for a certain amount of time (e.g., two weeks, a month, two months, etc.), students can write a reflective paper in Quick Office, WPS Office, Pages, or SwiftKey regarding their eating habits, nutrition, how their eating changed over time, and how they can eat more healthily using the information from their food log.
  4. Teachers can instruct students to use MyFitnessPal in tandem with the Weight Lifting Videos app to learn new exercises and track their fitness. At the end of a semester, students can use the caloric tracker and progress tracker information to create a short documentary about their personal workout plan they completed over the semester using Videolicious, Touchcast, or iMovie.
