Instructional Ideas

  1. Music teachers can teach students about different composers and then let them sample their music using Classical Masterpieces. Students can then respond to the music by writing what they liked or did not like about it, where they have heard the music before, or by identifying specific techniques used in the piece.
  2. Music teachers can have students rank the composers according to their influence, fame, or legacy using the Classical Masterpieces app. To do so, students would first read the biographies of different composers and then listen to their music. Next, students can discuss which composers were most influential, famous, or left the most enduring legacy. Additionally, students can compose a rationale to justify their rankings. The rationales can justify each selection’s ranking individually or the rankings for the entire group. Finally, teachers can facilitate a class discussion in which students share their rankings and justifications in order to come to a class consensus.
  3. Students can conduct research about famous composers by using Classical Masterpieces as a reference. Moreover, to complement a traditional written report, students can create visual aids (either videos or images) to support their research using other apps, such as iMovie, Educreations, Paper by FiftyThree, Notability, Explain Everything, or another function-based app.
  4. When learning about classical music, teachers can play selections of famous pieces from Classical Masterpieces for students. As students listen to the pieces, they can critique the pieces based off what musical techniques they identified, what they liked/disliked about the piece, or by some other criterion.
