The Common Core Standards app contains a searchable index of the Common Core State Standards. The app is arranged with two headings—one for standards and the other for resources. Following is a search bar, with a list of subjects directly underneath. Teachers can use the search bar to enter a keyword, or they can use it to identify a specific standard. For example, if a teacher typed 7.RP.A.2 into the search bar, the search would return the subject area applicable to the standard, as well as the full text for that standard. Teachers also have the option to first select a subject and then the applicable grade level in order to view the accompanying standards. Therefore, high school teachers searching the Common Core Standards for English III could first choose “Language Arts” as the subject area, and then choose “11th Grade.” At this point, teachers are able to scroll through and preview all of the applicable standards for English III. Upon selecting a specific standard, they are presented with the complete standard, its corresponding anchor standard, and additional notes regarding that standard. Finally, by clicking the Resources heading, teachers have access to other helpful information, such as a math glossary and instructions for reading the standards.

Instructional Ideas

  1. When planning lessons and units, teachers can use the Common Core Standards app to view the standards they need to teach before planning activities.
  2. Prior to starting a lesson, teachers can use the Common Core Standards app to project the standard(s) to be addressed in the lesson. Next, the teacher can discuss how the work and activities that make up the lesson will address the identified standard(s).
  3. As teachers design assessments, the Common Core Standards app can be used to identify and align specific standards to different assessment items. By doing so, teachers will then be able to identify standards for which students demonstrate proficiency, as well as those that might require further instruction as items are scored. Following a summative assessment, teachers can analyze the resulting scores in order to identify the standards in which students had the most and least success.
