Instructional Ideas

  1. Instead of having students complete traditional research papers, teachers can have students present a research topic as a course in this app. Each micro-lesson for the course can represent a different aspect of the topic. For example, when researching an individual, different micro-lessons can focus on a person’s childhood, education, work, legacy, and awards. Or, for a scientific experiment, micro-lessons can focus on background knowledge about the topic, a hypothesis, data collection, data analysis, findings, and implications.
  2. To introduce students to using Coursmos, teachers can have students create a course about a personal hobby or interest. The micro-lessons in the courses can cover topics such as: (1) What is the hobby/interest? (2) How were they introduced to the hobby/interest? (3) Why do they find the hobby/interest so engaging? (4) How does the hobby/interest benefit them? These courses can then be shared as an Introductory Movie Day activity. While viewing the videos, classmates will have to record two to three specific details they learned about the person based on the micro-lessons.
  3. Teachers can allow students to peruse and view the different courses in this app that may interest them. When they find a course that interests them, they can summarize what they learned by watching all the micro-lessons, or they can summarize the information presented in each micro-lesson. These summaries can be composed using an app such as Pages, WPS Office, or Microsoft Word.
  4. As an introduction to this app, teachers can find three courses. One course should be high quality, another medium quality, and another low quality. As a class, the students should watch each video and discuss the qualities of the different courses. Questions teachers can ask to stir conversation include: (1) What did you like/not like about this course? (2) How did the course build viewer’s knowledge? (3) Was the presenter effective in communicating his or her message?
