Instructional Ideas
- When students come across an unknown word, they can use the Dictionary app to find the word’s definition and “star” it for future reference.
- During a month, unit, semester, or entire year, a class can create and decorate a word tree. To do so, a teacher can “plant” a word tree on a bulletin board. Next, as students come across words they do not know, they can write the word and its definition using the Dictionary app on a “leaf” and tape it to the word tree. Over time, the tree will blossom!
- As students define words using the Dictionary app, they can keep a record of which words they define by “starring” them. Then, each week, teachers can have students review their list of starred words to help them learn their definitions. Using the words in writing or in conversation will help students retain the words’ meaning.
