English Literature Revision Games: A Quiz App
Summary : A Great Way to Review Canonical Texts
English Literature Revision Games contains quizzes and activities for 14 novels, 14 sonnets, and 7 Shakespearean plays. For the novels and plays, users can take a quiz that evaluates their general knowledge of the work, the characters who said specific quotes, and ability to identify characters based on their description. Plus, there is a Venn-diagram feature that allows users to compare two characters from a specific work. For each sonnet, the app first provides users with its complete text and an annotation tool. After they have read and annotated the sonnet, users can take a general quiz about it. In all quizzes, users must correctly answer the question before being allowed to advance to the next question. Plus, the app records their time and accuracy.
Please note: Only a limited amount of content can be accessed in this app for free. Users will have to purchase a subscription to access all of the app’s content.
Instructional Ideas
- After reading a literary work included in this app, teachers can have students complete the quizzes designed for it. Teachers can require students retake each quiz until they earn 100%.
- After becoming familiar with the quiz questions in this app, teachers can have students write new quiz questions that model the types found in this app. The questions can be in addition to the ones already made for the works in this app, or teachers can have students write questions for works not included in this app. Students can write the questions using the UX Documents, Office Offline, or WPS Office apps. Students can email their questions to their teacher, who can organize them into a new quiz and then post the quiz to a class website for students to take.
- Teachers can use this app to instruct students in annotation. To do so, teachers can connect their iPad to a projector and load a sonnet using this app. Next, teachers can show students the different annotation tools that are available on the right menu and then conduct a mini-lesson on annotating sonnets. Teachers can add a twist to this activity by having students read a sonnet in this app and then take a quiz without annotating it. Next, teachers can do their mini-lesson on annotating sonnets. Finally, teachers can have students read a sonnet, annotate it, and then take a quiz. If done correctly, students’ quiz scores should have increased because of the annotation.
