English “Mad-Lib” O-Mania! – App Lesson

Description: This app lesson develops students’ creative writing, parts of speech, grammar, and vocabulary ability.

Instructional Objective: Students will review parts of speech and engage in a creative writing activity by completing practice Mad libs before researching an article, converting it to a mad lib, and then posting it to a class website.

Step 1: Students will complete 1-3 exercises using the Mad Libs app to review parts of the speech and the structure of a mad lib.

Step 2: Students will use the Timeline – News in Context app to select an article that they will read and then choose significant pieces of language (e.g., parts of speech, descriptive words, vocabulary terms) that can be modified.

Step 3: Students will use the TextEditor app to type the article (or excerpts from the article) and substitute blanks in for the piece of language they selected from Step 2. Based on the Mad Lib format, directions for what type of word should fill the blank need to be included as a parenthetical note following each blank.

Step 4: Students will then post their completed Mad Lib to a class website, so other students can complete it.
