FarFaria: A Book for Early Literacy
Summary : A Library of Children Books Waiting for Your Young Learner!
FarFaria is an online library of children’s books. In the library, there are hundreds of books that are colorfully illustrated. Plus, all the books in this app are lexiled and aligned to the Common Core State Standards readability grade-level indicators. When users select a book, they can choose the “read to me” option, the “auto-play” option, or the “read myself” option. If users choose the “read to me” option, FarFaria will read an entire page and then pause, waiting for the user to swipe the page. When “auto-play” is selected, FarFaria will read the entire book and turn pages automatically. If “read myself” is selected, users read the book independently. When FarFaria reads a book in either the “read to me” or “auto-play” modes, it highlights each word as it is read and narrates using an emotive voice. While reading a book in any mode, users can tap the screen, which allows them to select the “play” option, start the book over, “favorite” the book, or exit. If the “play” option is selected, FarFaria will begin to read the book to the user. The “start over” option returns the book back to its first page. The “favorite” option bookmarks the book and saves it to a user’s favorite list, and the “exit” button returns the user to the main menu.
Instructional Ideas
- During independent-reading time, teachers can have students pick a book from this app and either read it or have it read to them.
- To build comprehension skills, teachers can assign all the students in a class to read the same book. Next, teachers can have students retell what happened in the book to a partner, or the two students can summarize what happened in the book. Next, the teacher can have the pairs share their retellings and/or summaries with the class.
- To develop reading-fluency skills, teachers can have students select a book and choose the “auto-play” option, so this book is read to them. Once the app reads the book, teachers can then have students select the “read myself” option and read the same book again, but this time they will read it independently.
- After reading a book, teachers can have students critique it by asking them if they liked or did not like the book. Next, teachers can push them by asking them to explain why they did or did not like the book.
- Teachers can begin developing students’ abilities to identify and use text-based evidence. For example, teachers can ask students about an event that happened in the book. As students answer, teachers can ask them to swipe to the page that shows when that action happened.
