Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can have students track their food for a period of time (e.g., a week, month, or grading period). At the end of the time period, teachers can have students explain what they learned from tracking their food. This explanation can be in the form of an essay, multimedia presentation, or speech.
  2. Teachers can have students create their perfect meal by researching foods using the “browse” feature in this app. After finding the foods, teachers can have students analyze the nutritional value of the meal. This analysis can lead into a conversation by the teacher asking questions such as: (1) What do you think would happen to you if you ate this meal each day? (2) Would this meal be good or harmful to an athlete? (3) What foods could you substitute into this meal as replacements to make the meal healthier?
  3. Teachers can have students apply the food pyramid to this app. To do so, teachers can have students find the 10 least healthy foods listed in this app. Next, teachers can have students find the 10 most healthy foods listed in this app. Once their 20 foods are found, teachers can have students place the foods on a food-pyramid organizer. These completed pyramids can be posted on the wall, and the class can do a gallery walk. To analyze the pictures, teachers can ask students: (1) What do the healthy foods have in common? (2) What do the least healthy foods have in common? (3) What did you learn by seeing the foods presented on the food pyramid?
  4. Teachers can have students research a nutritional tip and share it on the “Home” screen.
