Ginger Page – Writing Compass, Translator, & Dictionary

Ginger Page provides users with an assortment of language tools, including a grammar checker, translator, dictionary, and thesaurus. When first launching the app, users are required to register. Once registered, users will have access to Ginger Page’s tools. To begin, users can tap the button on the top left of the main screen, which provides them with a menu of tools. The “write” tool allows users to type text into the provided box, and if a grammatical or spelling error appears in the text, Ginger Page will highlight the error and offer a correction. Users can make any correction by tapping the correction that appears under the box. Additionally, users can copy the text they typed, change its size, or save it as a favorite for referencing later. The “translation” tool allows users to type a word or phrase they wish to translate in the box and select the languages they want to use for the translation (e.g., English to German). When ready, users tap the “translate” button under the box, and Ginger Page will automatically translate the word or phrase. The “dictionary” tool allows users to type a word they want defined into the box, and Ginger Page provides them with its definition. The “thesaurus” tool allows users to type a word into the box and then hit the “search” button. Ginger Page will provide them with a list of synonyms. Others features, such as the Phrase of the Day and the Personal Dictionary, provide further ways for users to engage this app, and users are able to share their writing and word’s definition over email, on Facebook and Twitter, or in a different app.

Instructional Ideas

1. After assigning students a writing assignment, teachers can demonstrate this app to students. During the demonstration, teachers can show students how to use this app’s grammar checker, dictionary, and thesaurus features to improve their writing. Then, as students move through the editing and revising stages of the writing process, they can use this app to improve their work.
2. As part of vocabulary lessons, teachers can have students add new words to their Personal Dictionary, which is located in the app, for later review. They can also use the app’s built-in dictionary and thesaurus features for deeper language study.
3. As a warm-up activity or journal prompt, teachers can show students the Phrase of the Day, which is located in the app, and have students use the phrase in a writing activity.
