HelloTalk Language Exchange Learning: An App for Foreign Language

Summary : A Social Approach to Language Learning

HelloTalk Language Exchange Learning connects users to other users who are interested in teaching and learning a new language. First, users must register with the app, and it asks them to enter information about themselves, including their native language and the language they wish to learn. After registering with the app, users are taken to the main screen, which includes multiple options. With the buttons on the bottom of the screen, users can tap the “Hello Talk” button to see a log of their conversations, and it offers users a “Notepad” tool. With the Notepad, users can enter messages. Once entered, users can tap a message to access additional options, which includes being able to translate the message into another language, favorite the message, or have the app read it to them. Users can also record a message, and the app will transcribe the message and then translate it into another language. The “Partners” button allows users to request language partners or enter a group chat. The “Search” button allows users to find other users to chat with in different language. When users find a person they would like to contact, they must tap that person’s icon to send him/her a message. By doing so, users will be presented a new screen where they enter their message, and they must tap the blue “Paper Airplane” icon to send the message. Once a message is sent or received, users can see the message on the screen. Users can then tap the message to pull up an additional screen, which lets them favorite, edit, and translate the message among other options.

Please Note: This app includes additional options that let users communicate with other users in a variety of ways. It is recommended users experiment with these options.

 Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can require students to contact at least three other users per week to practice their language learning.
  2. When needing help translating language, students can draft a message by tapping the “Hello Talk” button and then choosing the “Notepad” option. Next, students can write their message in their native language and enter it. They can then tap the message, and the app will translate it into another language.
  3. Teachers can have students contact individuals from different countries where the language they are speaking is the country’s national language.
  4. Teachers can have students use the “Notepad” option to record themselves talk in either their native language or a foreign language. This way, students can hear themselves speak.
