HMH Common Core Reading Practice and Assessment Grade 5

HMH Common Core Reading Practice and Assessment (Grade 5) prepares users for standardized reading tests. In the app, users can select a practice unit, and multiple lessons are included in each unit. (Please note: Only one unit is available for free.) For each lesson, users are presented with a reading passage and accompanying questions. Users are to first read the passage, and then answer a series of questions that include multiple-choice questions and organizer-based questions. While answering the questions, users are able to access and reread the text. Once users have completed all the questions, they tap the “star” button to submit their work for grading. Once graded, users are provided a report that details their accuracy percentage, the questions they answered correctly and incorrectly, and the alignment of the questions to the Common Core State Standards and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge. If users create a class, additional features are available for classroom management and monitoring.

Instructional Ideas

1. Teachers can have students complete a lesson weekly in this app. To track their growth, teachers can have students graph their achievement, both for accuracy and number of questions they answer correctly aligned to the different levels of Webb’s Depth of Knowledge.
2. Teachers can have students complete the lessons in this app in pairs that consist of a higher and lower achieving student. To organize the activity, the students can read the passage by exchanging reading roles for each paragraph. Then, the students can work together to discuss and select the correct answers to the questions.
3. Teachers can have all the students in a class complete the same lesson. As an extension activity, teachers can have students create an additional question aligned to the reading passage. After all students have created their question, they can email or share their question to their teacher. The teacher then can present the question to the class, and students can be required to answer it.
4. After students become familiar with the app’s design, teachers can have students search for a text that is relevant to them. Next, teachers can have students read the passage and create questions aligned to it that model the ones in this app. The link to the article and questions can be saved in an app, such as WPS Office, Notability, or Word. Students can then swap devices or email the document to a fellow student who is responsible for reading the passage and answering the questions. Lastly, the student who found the passage and created the questions will then grade the work.
