Kid Learn to Spell: An App for Spelling
Summary : An Easy-To-Use App for Elementary Spelling
Kid Learn to Spell teaches users how to write objects they encounter in their everyday lives. From the main menu, users must first select the category of words they wish to spell (e.g., animals, colors, fruit, transportation, etc.). The app will then load spelling words specific to the category. For example, if users select the “Kitchen” category, the spelling words include cup, teapot, chopsticks, cleaver, and other similar words. For each word, the app provides blanks and letter tiles. Users are to tap the letter tiles in order and the app will insert them onto the blank spaces. If users spell the word correctly, the app congratulates them and advances them to the next word. If users spell the word incorrectly, the app shows them the correct spelling and has them repeat spelling the word. When spelling words, users can use the “left” and “right” arrows to change words, the “horn” button to have the app pronounce the word, and the “?” button to view the correct spelling of the word.
Please Note: This app does contain ads that might distract users.
Instructional Ideas
- In preparation for an upcoming quiz, students can use this app to practice spelling words that might appear on the quiz.
- Once students have completed all the words for a specific category in this app, they can search for additional words that can be included for that category. When they identify a word, they can create an image to represent it using an Artwork Production app. After creating a piece of art that is representative of the word, students can print out their work and hang it in the classroom. Teachers can take this activity a step further by assigning students different categories and requiring them to find 1, 3, 5 or more words that can be included in that category. As students produce artwork for their words, teachers can hang up the artwork in the classroom by grouping the artwork into the pre-assigned categories.
- After students spell a word correctly using this app, teachers can require them to use the word contextually in a sentence. Students can write their sentence using an Office app, and they can email their work to the teacher for grading.
