Kids ABC lite teaches users letter-recognition and handwriting skills. After launching the app, users can choose the Read, Write, or Play options. The “Read” option presents users with a letter and an image that begins with that letter. For example, the first letter presented is “A,” and an image of an “Angel Fish” is shown. When users tap the letter, the app will pronounce “A” and, if users tap the image, the app will pronounce “Angel Fish.” (Please note: There is a “record” option included in this feature of the app, but there are bugs with it.) The “Write” option teaches users to trace letters. To do so, the app shows users a letter and they can view a short video modeling how to write it. Next, users can practice writing it on an outline. If users make a mistake, they can tap the eraser and try again. There is a “Review” feature in this app that records the letters written by users. Finally, the “Play” option allows users access to a game. In it, multiple letters are tied to balloon strings, and then the app pronounces a letter. Users are to tap the balloon with the correct letter tied to its string. After the game, the app shows students a grade for their performance.
Instructional Ideas
- To review and transfer letter-identification skills, teachers can show students a letter, an image, and then pronounce the name of the image. Students will then be responsible for stating the beginning letter. For example, teachers can show students an image of a camel and students will need to respond correctly by saying “C.”
- After becoming familiar with tracing letters in this app, teachers can assess if the skill transfers. To do so, teachers can say a letter and have students write it on a piece of paper.
- After completing a game in the “Play” feature of this app, students can take a screen shot of their performance for their teacher to view.
