King of Math builds users’ foundational numeracy skills by having them use mental math to solve problems. When entering King of Math, users create a new profile (themed around the feudal system) and then choose a book. Each book contains nine chapters, and each chapter contains 10 questions. When a chapter is selected, users are given a question or prompt and are offered four possible answers. Users must select the correct answer to progress to the next question. If users answer two questions incorrectly in a chapter, they must restart the chapter, and the questions and prompts get increasingly more challenging as users progress through a book’s chapters. As users progress through a book and earn points for complete answers, their character is promoted (e.g., from farmer to blacksmith, and so on …). Lastly, additional books about several different math skills can be purchased.
Instructional Ideas
- During a break between activities or as a review before a test, Math teachers can have students practice different numeracy skills independently using this app.
- After becoming familiar with this game, Math teachers can have their students create questions that model the types of questions asked by this app.
- Math teachers can project this app on a screen and answer the questions as a class. To add a conceptual understanding level to this app, math teachers can have students compose a short, constructed-response piece of writing that explains either how to identify the answer or justify their selection of the correct answer.
