Lekh Diagrams: An App for Graphic Organizers
Summary : Customizing Graphic Organizers
Lekh Diagram allows users to create diagrams, graphic organizers, and charts on an interactive workspace. When launched and the “pencil” tool is selected from the top menu, users are able to create shapes by drawing them with their finger, and Lekh Diagram automatically converts the drawings to well-defined shapes. Users can then tap the “T” button from the top menu to add text. Users can also adjust the size, color, and thickness of the shapes and text they added. Plus, users can select the “Library” option, which contains pre-made shapes that they can add to their workspace.
Please note: To export the diagrams, users must make an in-app purchase. An alternative is for users to take a screen shot of their diagram and email it using their iPad’s camera roll.
Instructional Ideas
- After reading a text that explains a relationship between two topics, principles, or characters, teachers can have students represent that relationship using this app. Additionally, teachers can have students include text in their diagram that explains the relationship. Diagrams and text can be saved to a student’s camera roll by taking a screen shot and then email to a teacher or upload to a class website.
- To demonstrate their understanding of a geometric principle, students can make shapes, angles, and/or other figures and include precise measurements for them using this app. Or, students can identify an object (e.g., a refrigerator, car, or dresser), measure its dimensions, and then reproduce it to scale in this app. The work can be saved to a student’s camera roll by taking a screen shot and then email to a teacher or upload to a class website.
- Students can use this app to create a map of a location (e.g., a city, classroom, house). Students can then add shapes and figures and label them appropriately. The map can be saved to a student’s camera roll by taking a screen shot and then email to a teacher or upload to a class website.
