Let’s Create! is a ceramics simulation that allows users to virtually throw pottery and sell it at auction. Users are presented with clay on a spinning wheel and can sculpt it into a pot by moving their fingers over the clay. While Let’s Create! does allow users to control the height and width of the sculpture, users are unable to manipulate the speed of the wheel or the moisture of the clay. After throwing their pot, users go through the firing process and a photo of the finished pot is taken. Users can then decide whether to sell the pot at a virtual auction or just keep a picture of it. If users sell the pot at auction, they earn fake money that they can use to buy items. If users do not sell their pots, they can retain images of their pots using the photo option. Lastly, Let’s Create! includes a narrative of sorts, which challenges users to create pots to certain specifications.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Art teachers can teach students how to compose art critiques using this app by instructing students to create a pot within the app. Once satisfied with their pots, students take a screen capture of it that can either be printed or projected for the class to view. The teacher and class can then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the piece. To add another layer, teachers could have students write their critiques from the perspective of a fellow artist, art teacher, art critic, parent of the artist, etc.
  2. Again, taking the role of an art critic, students could transfer the skills they acquired from critiquing their classmates’ artwork. To do so, teachers can instruct students to research a professional potter and compose a critique of the potter’s work. Critiques can be written or verbally presented, and visuals can be created using apps such as Popplet or Notability. Alternatively, students can create video critiques using apps like Educreations or iMovie. In both instances, students can share their critiques on a class website or virtual community.
  3. Art teachers could have students create three pieces of virtual pottery using this app. Next, teachers could require students to research different styles of pottery to look for connections to the pieces they created. Finally, teachers could require students to articulate those findings in writing, verbally, or digitally.
  4. An Art teacher could create a class competition over the course of a week, month, or semester to see which student can throw the piece of pottery that sells for the most at auction. The top-finishing students could earn extra credit by composing a rationale that justifies why their pots were the high sellers.
