Little Musician: An App for Instruments
Summary : How Well Do You Know Your Instruments?
Little Musician—Musical Instruments teaches users basic information about musical instruments. In the app, there are two main choices. First, users can select the “Learn” option, which provides them with basic information about categories of musical instruments, such as wind, brass, strings, keyboards, and percussion instruments. To learn about the instruments, users tap a category and Little Musicians provides them with general information about the instruments and images of the instruments included in that category. Second, users can select the “Game” option, which provides them with “Finger Games” and “Card Games” that they can complete. When the “Finger Games” is selected, there are two activities. Each activity plays a sound for users and provides them with images of the instruments. Users must tap the image of the instrument that played the sound. The “Card Games” lets users choose the “1 Player” or “Battle” option. Again, a sound is played and users must identify it as quickly as possible.
Please note: There are some activities that require users to have Music Cards. These cards are needed to fully unlock this app’s potential.
Instructional Ideas
- Teachers can allow students time to engage this app’s “Learn” option so they gain an understanding of instruments’ names and sounds independently. Once students feel comfortable with identifying instruments, teachers can show students an instrument and play it. Next, teachers can allow students to play the instrument. Finally, teachers can discuss the instrument with students by asking: (1) Did you like the sounds the instrument made? (2) Is this instrument easy or hard to play? (3) If you were in a band, would you like to play this instrument? Students can respond to the prompts orally or in writing.
- After students have become familiar with the instruments’ names and sounds in this app, teachers can show students an instrument and play it for them. Students then will have to name the type of instrument played.
- After students become familiar with the types of instruments in this app, teachers can let them experiment with playing different instruments on their iPad. To do so, teachers can let students explore the instruments in the Lily Rock Band, Easy Xylophone, Music Sparkles, or Bongos Free apps. After letting students play the different instruments, teachers can ask: (1) Which instruments did you most enjoy playing? (2) Do you think the instruments were easy or challenging to play? (3) If you were going to be a professional musician, which instrument would you play? Students can respond to the prompts orally or in writing.
