Memrise provides detailed units to support users as they learn up to 13 different languages. After creating a profile and selecting the language they wish to learn, users can select individual tutorials to learn within the larger unit. For example, in the French unit, there are 11 tutorials from which to choose, which range from Basic and Elementary French to Advanced French. When users select a tutorial, Memrise introduces them to key vocabulary by both pronouncing and showing users the word(s), and then Memrise reinforces the vocabulary by having students select the word’s meaning from a multiple-choice list. Plus, Memrise provides images that show the word’s meaning as part of its tutorials. Finally, as users complete the tutorials, they are awarded points, and Memrise presents with them with a report at the end of each tutorial that outlines their performance based on those points.
Instructional Ideas
- After teaching a lesson about a specific group of vocabulary words, teachers can have students complete tutorials in this app that align with the lesson taught. Then, if students score less than an 80%, teachers can have students redo the tutorial. To hold students accountable, teachers can require them to send a screen shot of their performance report that is provided at the end of the tutorial.
- Once students understand how this app this functions, they can create similar questions using the Quizlet or Quizzam app. Next, they can have a classmate complete their quiz.
- Teachers can have students complete tutorials in this app in pairs. When organizing this activity, one student will be responsible for reading the questions and all the answer choices, and the other student will be responsible for answering the question. Students can swap roles after every question, after every three questions, or after each tutorial.
- Teachers can create a friendly class competition by seeing which student can successfully complete all the tutorials for a specific language with a score of 90% or higher.
