Miss Spell’s Class is a game designed to assess users’ knowledge of spelling. When users launch the app, they can decide to play against an opponent (if an opponent is available) or play a practice game. When they enter the game, users are presented with a word, and they have to decide if the word is spelled correctly or incorrectly by tapping the corresponding button. They are presented with 20 words per game. However, users have to be quick, because they only have three seconds to decide if the word is spelled correctly or incorrectly. After the game is over, users are presented with an overall grade based on the amount of words they labeled as correct or incorrect. Additionally, Miss Spell’s Class allows users to review the words they were presented with as part of the game. In the review, users can see the correct spelling of the word, hear the word pronounced, and read its definition. Finally, users are also able to adjust settings for the game, which include sound, music, font, and notification options.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Students can play this game independently three times a week as a class activity. After they play each game, they can track their final score and record the words they did not identify as being spelled correctly or incorrectly. By recording their scores, students will be able to analyze if they are improving their spelling ability. Additionally, by recording the words they did not identify correctly, they will create a log of words that they can study.
  2. After playing a game, teachers can have students select one word that they did not identify as being spelled correctly or incorrectly. When reviewing their results, students can study this word by reading its definition and hearing it pronounced. Next, students can conduct a word study activity about the word by using the word in a graphic organizer (e.g., Frayer Word Box) or creating a semantic map of the word using another app, such as Popplet or MindMeister.
  3. To reinforce their word knowledge, teachers can have students choose a word or words they did not select as being spelled correctly or incorrectly. Next, to explain the word’s spelling and/or definition, teachers can have students create a mini-lesson of the word using Educreations or Explain Everything. These videos can then be exported and shared.
