Mission U.S.: Think Fast! – An App for History
Summary : Role Playing in the United States’ Past
Mission U.S.: Think Fast! is a trivia game that focuses on the history of the United States. After launching the app, users choose one of two missions. The first mission is to find a missing character named “Thimble” during Colonial times and the second mission focuses on rescuing “Jonah” from a plantation. After choosing the mission to complete, a character from that mission asks users questions. Users must answer the questions correctly to score points and advance in the mission. Each round lasts five minutes and users earn a ranking by answering questions quickly and accurately.
Please Note: This app’s companion website is located at http://www.mission-us.org/.
Instructional Ideas
- As a review, teachers can have students complete a mission in this app. Students who earn the highest ranking can receive extra credit on an assignment for their performance.
- After or while completing a mission, teachers can have students select one question from the mission for further research. To research it, teachers can have student write out the question and answer and then find two or more additional sources that supports the question’s authenticity. For each resource found, students can write its full citation using MLA or APA and then provide a brief synopsis that explains how and why the resource supports the question. Students’ work can be emailed to their teacher or posted to a class website.
- After becoming familiar with this app, students can create a game that models the question-and-answer format used by the app. The topic of the students’ game can be based on a current or historical event.
- After completing a mission in this app, students can research additional information related to the mission’s topic and compose multiple-choice questions about it.
