Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can play a song for students and have them use this app to identify it. Next, teachers can have students explore similar songs by clicking the “recommendations” option. Teachers can require students to list three songs that they think are the most similar out of the recommendations provided. For each similar song they selected, teachers can have students write a justification explaining why the song is similar.
  2. Students can tap the “Popular” button from this app’s main screen and browse the trending songs. After viewing the list, teachers can have students respond to the following the prompts or facilitate a class conversation using them. Sample prompts include: (1) Why do you suppose these songs are popular? (2) Are these songs more similar or different? (3) What surprises you about this list? (4) Is one musical genre more represented than others on this list? Why do you think that is so?
  3. After using this app to identify a song, teachers can have students read the song’s lyrics. After reading the lyrics, teachers can have students rewrite the song as a parody. Next, teachers can have students record their parody using the TouchCast or iMovie app and then post it to a learning community such as Edmodo or Schoology.
