Next-Generation Science Standards

The Next-Generation Science Standards provides users with an organized system for finding and viewing the standards. From its home screen, users can tap the “Standards” button on the top left to view standards by Disciplinary Core Ideas, Topic Arrangement, Conceptual Progressions Model, or Domains Model. When users select a specific standard, the app provides them with a statement that defines what students who are competent in the standard can do; connections to science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts; how the standard connects across grade bands; and connections to the Common Core State Standards. Additionally, users can tap the “Resources” button on the top left to view reports about the standards and appendices that support users in implementing the standards. Finally, there is a MasteryConnect option that allows users to request a free demo for using pre-made assessments related directly to the standards.

Classroom Applications

1. Teachers can use this app to ensure that they are teaching the Next-Generation Science Standards. As teachers craft their lessons with these standards, they can align their formative assessments to the “Students who demonstrate understanding can” statement(s).
2. When planning horizontally with colleagues, Science teachers and English Language Arts teachers can align their instruction between the Next-Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards by viewing the connections between the two sets of standards listed in this app.
3. As teachers design their unit calendars and lesson plans, they can view the chronology in which this app lists the standards for their course. Then, as they design their unit and lessons, they can consult with this app to ensure that they taught all the applicable standards. However, teachers should consider the order of when to teach the different standards, and teach them in a way that is appropriate for their students.
