Numbers: A Best App for Teachers
Summary : The same Numbers you know and love, with a brand new touch.
Numbers is the app version of Apple’s prominent spreadsheet-productivity software by the same name. Users interact with Numbers by touching its different cells to input data or text to fill in spreadsheets, create tables, and make charts. Once users’ data is entered into Numbers, they can calculate everything from basic functions, like sums or averages, to sophisticated trigonometric, financial, and engineering functions. Users can format columns with different value types (numbers, currency, percentages, date/time, etc.), different color fills, and import images. Finally, Numbers includes a host of preloaded templates, such as Personal Budget, Retirement Savings, Mortgage Calculator, Calendar, Meal Planner, Employee Schedule, and Grade Book, which allow users to easily input and calculate their data. Users can share their spreadsheets usng an iCloud or email.
Please note: Numbers is available as a free download when users first launch their iPad. If users do not download it at that time, Numbers costs $9.99 to download.
Instructional Ideas
- In the Science classroom, students can use this app to record lab data or data collected over an extended period of time, calculate answers, and then to create tables and charts of their findings.
- In the Math classroom, students can use this app to help them calculate number sets. Additionally, students can input data to solve financial equations, logic statements, numerical functions, trigonometric equations, and statistical questions using this app’s library of functions.
- In the History classroom, students can use this app to calculate dates, crunch numbers on imports and exports, find answers to historical statistical inquiries, and calculate inflation or currency values.
- In the Physical Education classroom, students can use this app to record times, calories, reps, heart rates, etc. For nutrition lessons, assign students the Meal Planner template included in this app.
