Nutrition Quiz contains many quizzes and entries about a variety of health-related categories. Examples of categories include Lifestyle & Shopping, Functional Foods, Vitamins & Minerals, and Men & Women, and the categories are available by clicking the “Category” button on the main screen. Once users select a category, they can choose to peruse its topics by tapping its icon, which will present them with a list of statements about that category. (Please note: This option is only available for some categories.) As users read the statements, they can tap once more for additional information about that statement. However, if users would rather take a quiz, they can tap the “Play” button on the main screen, and they will be presented with a 10-question quiz. When taking a quiz, Nutrition Quiz pulls statements from all categories, and it presents a question to users in the form of a statement. In response to the statement, users must decide if it is a “fact” or “myth” by tapping the appropriate icon. Users then score points for answering correctly and quickly. Regardless if users answer correctly or incorrectly, they are presented with additional information about the statement. Also, users can mark questions as their “favorites” so they can review them at a later date. At the end of the quiz, users are presented their overall score and can view their global ranking on the Leaderboard.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can have students take a quiz. For each question students answer incorrectly, they can be required to write down the statement and read the information about it provided by the app. Then, to help develop their research skills, teachers can have students find a credible resource that also supports the statement as being true.
  2. To assign students a research topic, they can take a quiz. Then, students can be required to select a research topic based on the statements they answered incorrectly.
  3. After taking multiple quizzes to understand the format used by this app, teachers can have students create their own categories and develop paper-and-pencil quizzes that are modeled after the ones in this app. For each quiz question, students will have to create a statement that is either a fact or myth, and then compose a paragraph that explains why it is a fact or myth.
  4. Students can view a list of statements in the Men & Women, Sugar & Spice, or Functional Food categories. Next, students will have to create a “Top Five Most Fascinating Facts” list about them. To do so, students will have to review the list, select their top five statements, and rank them in order. Next, students will have to compose a paragraph rationale for why the fact is fascinating and why it is ranked as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th place. Finally, students can present their list using a presentation app.
