O. Henry Short Stories Collection

O. Henry Short Stories Collection contains the works of the famous 19^th century author. When this app is launched, it presents users with O. Henry’s stories, organized by book. Users tap one of the books, and they are then shown the book’s complete text. Users can swipe through the book’s content, or they can tap the text to access different options. The options include a multi-page view, the table of contents, and a search box. With the multi-page view, users are able to view 15 pages at once. The table of contents lets users scan the titles of the short stories, and select a title by tapping it. Once its title is tapped, the short story appears on the screen. The search box allows users to input words and phrases and locate them in the text. Additionally, this app contains text-annotation features that allow users to highlight, underline, mark through, insert, compose, and put shapes around text directly on the short story. Lastly, if users see a story that interests them, they can bookmark it to access it easily at a later time.

Instructional Ideas

1. When teaching students how to annotate texts as part of a close read, teachers can have students practice underlining, highlighting, and composing text using this app’s built-in text-annotation features.
2. As an author study unit on O. Henry, teachers can first have their students read a biography of the author. Next, teachers can have their students browse and read different short stories included in this app. Finally, students can respond to the prompt: How does O. Henry’s short stories reflect or NOT reflect his life experiences? In this response, students need to cite, reference, or quote textual evidence.
3. Teachers can have students select two to five short stories from this app and read them. Next, teachers can have students rank the short stories from their most to least favorite. As part of this assignment, students will have to compose a paragraph to justify their rankings.
4. When instructing a short-stories unit, teachers can use this app to provide their students with access to multiple O. Henry stories.
