Oxford Picture Dictionary, Second Edition, Unit 1

Oxford Picture Dictionary, Second Edition, Unit 1 offers practical vocabulary-building skills for English Language learners. To begin, users first choose to view English or Spanish words. Next, users select from a set of words grouped together by category (e.g., school, time, colors). Categorized words and phrases are then presented to users, and users can tap a word or phrase to view a picture of it. When viewing the picture, users can choose to see the word in English if they had chosen the Spanish option, and vice versa, by tapping the option button at the bottom of the screen. Lastly, users are able to bookmark specific words for future reference, or they can quickly search for words using the search tool found in the top-right corner of the app.

Instructional Ideas

1. Teachers can use the Oxford Picture Dictionary app for a small group activity. First, students can be paired up and instructed to study a specific category of words or phrases. Students will then practice pronouncing words or phrases aloud to each other.
2. Students can conduct interviews with classmates using the Oxford Picture Dictionary app. To do so, teachers first instruct students to ask their interviewee a specific number of questions. Then, for each question the student creates, the student must include a word or phrase found in this app.
3. Teachers can create CLOZE passages for students to complete using words and phrases found in the Oxford Picture Dictionary app.
