Pages is a word-processing program that allows users to create documents that can be shared easily. When users launch Pages, they will see a list of the documents they previously created and saved to Pages and a blank document with a “+” symbol in it. If users want to view a previously created document, they can tap the document’s icon and it will automatically open. If users want to create a new document, they can tap the document with the “+” symbol. This action will load a menu of documents, and users can select a blank document or a template. The templates are formatted for reports, letters, resumes, envelopes, business cards, flyers & posters, cards, newsletters, and miscellaneous. When users select the type of document that they wish to create, Pages will load it and the users can add text and images to it. Plus, they can format the document, edit the document using track changes, and correct any spelling errors caught by Pages. Once satisfied with the document, users can save it before sharing it with other users by sending them its iCloud link, emailing them a copy of it, or opening it in another app.
Instructional Ideas
- When students are to compose a piece of writing for any reason, they can use this app to create and share their writing.
- This app can be used as part of a writing workshop. To do so, once students have created a piece of writing, they can select the “track changes” option. (This option is available by selecting the “wrench bar” on the menu and toggling the “change tracking” option to on.) Next, students can swap iPads with partners, and their partner can read the piece of writing and make edits, revisions, and suggestions to improve it. As they mark their partner’s writing, all their suggestions will be recorded. Students can then swap back iPads and decide if they want to use or not use their partner’s suggestions.
- Students can use this app to keep a journal or a collection of work. For example, if teachers use journals or bell ringers as part of their classroom routine, students can create a document using this app and add to it with each assignment. Once this assignment is completed multiple times, students will have amassed a collection of work.
