Paint Tester allows users to virtually paint walls in a room. To use the app, users must click the “New Photo” button on the top left of the screen. This button allows users to take a picture, import a picture from their library, or view a tutorial for using the app. (A tip for pictures is that the more brightly lit the room is in the picture, the better the results will be.) Once a picture is selected, the app imports it into the workspace. At this point, users can select the paint color by tapping the “paint” button on the bottom right of the screen, and users can select the exact color they wish to use to paint the room. When ready, users must tap the “Return to Painter” button on the top right. To apply the paint, users can tap the “bucket” or “paintbrush” on the bottom left of the screen. If the “bucket” is selected, it will paint the majority of the walls in the picture. If the “paintbrush” is selected, users can guide exactly where the paint goes. An “eraser” is available that can be used to remove mistakes, and “paint tape” can be used to make the painting more exact. When completed, users can tap the “Save a Copy” button on the top right of the screen, and Paint Tester will automatically save the work to the user’s camera roll.
Instructional Ideas
- As part of an interior design unit, teachers can have students take a picture of a room in their house and modify its walls by painting with this app. Once students have completed their work, they can save it to their camera roll, where it can be uploaded to a class website or emailed to their teacher. At this point, teachers can have classmates respond to the pictures by posting a response in the class website or writing a response on a sticky note. (Responses depend if the works are posted to a class website or printed out.)
- Instead of importing a picture of a room into this app, teachers can have students import a piece of famous artwork and modify its colors using this app. The artwork can be imported by students conducting an image search of the work or by using an art app such as Vincent van Gogh Art Gallery, Louvre HD, or Sphere 360 to browse potential images. (If an art app is used, users should take a screen shot of the picture.)
- As part of a contest, teachers can have students take a picture of the art classroom or another agreed-upon space. (Permission must be granted by building administrators.) Next, students will use this app to propose creative ways to repaint the room or space. The proposals can be posted to a website or printed out, and then students can vote on their favorite. Once a winner is announced, the classroom or space will be repainted using the winning proposal.
