PBS for iPad

PBS for iPad is a searchable database of PBS’s programming. With it, users can peruse featured programs or search for specific programs. Then, once they find a program of interest, users can view either the full-length program or a preview of it directly on their iPad. Additionally, PBS for iPad allows users to “favorite” programs and share them over Twitter, Facebook, or email. Users are also able to view PBS’s television programming by inputting their local zip code.

Instructional Ideas

1. To introduce a new unit, teachers can identify a video from this app and require students to view it. After viewing it, teachers can have students journal a response to the video, predict what they will be studying, or use discussion questions to facilitate a classroom conversation.
2. To help build students’ multiculturalism, teachers can find videos on this app that are authentic to a specific culture. Teachers can then pair the video with articles that further explain different cultural customs shown in the video. After viewing the videos and reading the articles, teachers and students can discuss the similarities between their own culture and the one studied. To document their thoughts, students can journal responses, complete graphic organizers, or create presentations.
3. After viewing a variety of the videos included in this app, teachers can create an assignment in which students make a documentary modeled after the ones they viewed. Touchcast is an ideal app for students to use when making their documentary.
