Photozeen is designed to improve users’ photography skills. After creating a profile, users can choose to complete “quests” by topic. Sample topics include nature, light, self-portrait, still life, and more! To take a quest, users tap the “lined” button on the top left of the screen, choose the “Take quests” option, choose the quest that interests them, read the short description of the quest, tap the “take a photo” button (users can either take a photo or import a photo from their gallery), add a title and description to their photo, and then tap the “done” button. Their photo will then be uploaded and the quest is completed. Other users can then view the photo and rate it. Users can then return to the menu by tapping the “lined” button, and then choose to “Rate others,” “Be inspired,” or check the “Leaderboard” by tapping the corresponding button. The “Rate others” option gives users the chance to score other users’ photos using a 10-star system. The “Be inspired” button lets users view images that other users have taken and are powerful. The “Leaderboard” shows the number of points that users have earned by taking pictures and rating other users’ pictures.

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can have students complete a “quest” in this app. To do so, students should browse the quest that they wish to complete, take their picture, add details about their picture, and then upload it. Students can then monitor any ratings their photo receives and view other photos taken for that quest. Teachers can then have students write a self-evaluation for their photo by first comparing it to the other photos taken for this quest, and then by having students identify their photo’s strengths, weaknesses, and ideas for retaking their photo. Finally, students can post their photo and self-evaluation to a class website.
  2. During a photography unit, teachers can create a bell-ringer activity in which they connect their iPad to a projector and show a photo from the “Be inspired” series listed in this app. Teachers can then have students journal in response to the photo. Sample journal prompts include: (1) What makes this photo inspirational? (2) Where do you think this photo was taken? (3) Who do you think took this photo? (4) Why do you think the person who took this photo did so? (5) What message does this photo convey to you?
  3. Teachers can support students as they develop their photo-critiquing abilities. To do so, a particular “quest” can be selected and the description for the quest read. Next, students and their teacher will view a photo for the quest and critique it. Conversation starters teachers can use to begin a critique include: (1) What message does this photo convey? (2) Does this photo seem original to you? (3) How was color used? (4) What makes this photo “pop”? (5) Do you think this photo is natural or staged?
  4. After becoming familiar with the content of this app, teachers can have students design their own photo quests. To do so, students will have to create a category and a brief description of the types of photos to be taken for this category. Next, students will be required to post their quest to a forum in the class website and classmates will then take photos for the quest and upload them to the website. The student who created the quest will be responsible for ranking the photos and choosing the winning photo. Teachers can extend this activity by requiring the student who created the quest to write feedback about each photo and a justification explaining why the winning photo was selected as the winner.
