PhysicalSci

Using videos, simulations, graphics, flashcards, and real-world examples, Physical Science Interactive Glossary provides an in-depth explanation of Physical Science concepts. The glossary is divided into six categories: (1) energy and systems, (2) force and motion, (3) electricity and magnetism, (4) matter and energy, (5) light and optics, and (6) sound and waves. Each category contains a list of applicable Science terms. When users select a term, they are presented with its definition and a short video that further explains it. Additionally, a flashcard feature is available for each category that allows users to easily review the presented content.…

Instructional Ideas

  1. Teachers can use PhysicalSci to engage students in a scavenger hunt to find or define a concept by providing them with a list of terms they are to locate within the app. To add a twist, teachers can also require students to use the term contextually in a sentence to further ensure comprehension. To make this activity into a classroom competition, students can be grouped into teams, and the first team to finish the scavenger hunt correctly wins!
  2. Teachers can use PhysicalSci to create a True-or-False review activity. To do so, teachers would first group students in pairs. Following, one partner is instructed to read a term and a definition of the term from the glossary to his or her partner. The catch is that the student reading the definition can choose to provide the term’s “true” definition or the term’s “false” definition. Therefore, the other partner is responsible for determining whether the presented definition was the term’s true or false definition. Additionally, students can be instructed to keep logs of terms that are missed for further study.
  3. Teachers can use PhysicalSci to engage students in a Pictionary activity. In groups, students review terms using this app. Then, using the randomizer component of the flashcards feature, a flashcard is picked for only one student’s viewing. That student then draws the concept on a white board, while the other group members try to guess what is being drawn.
  4. When studying a term that is not included in PhysicalSci, students can use this app as a model for creating their own entry for a term. Students can be instructed to create a video to explain the term using other multimedia apps, such as Videolicious, iMovie, Educreations, or 30Hands.
