PlayPosit: A Tool for Videos

Summary : Adding questions to videos, a tool teachers need!

PlayPosit allows teachers to embed questions, images, and text into videos. After registering with the website, teachers must click the “Design Video Bulb” to start embedding content into a video. At this point, teachers can either copy and paste a video’s URL from YouTube, TeacherTube, or another online video hosting service or they can use the “Browse” and “Search” tools to find videos. After selecting a video and adding information, PlayPosit loads the “edit page” where teachers can crop and add questions to the video. To crop the video, teachers must first select the “Crop Video” option and a blue timeline will appear. Teachers can then trim the beginning and end of the video by adjusting the tabs on the timeline. To add questions, teachers must let the video play to the point where they wish to add a question. Next, teachers must click the “Add Question” button and then choose the type of question they wish to add, which includes multiple choice, free response, and reflective pauses. (Please note, additional question types are available if teachers subscribe to this website.) Depending on the question type, teachers can add the stem and options for multiple-choice questions, a prompt for free response, and information for consideration for reflective pauses. When finished, teachers can tap the “Save and Continue” button. If teachers have already created a class in PlayPosit, they can assign it directly to their class. If not, Play Posit provides a URL for sharing their video manually and the code for embedding it on a webpage. After creating a video and sharing it with students, teachers can monitor student performance by clicking the “Monitor” option on the top right of the screen, choosing the video, and then selecting the “Get Assessment Data” option. Teachers can then see student performance on the multiple-choice question and view/grade their response to the open-ended questions.

Please Note: Play Posit includes additional features that are available for free or at a small cost. We highly recommend teachers begin using this website to create videos with questions and then expand possible ways to use this website!

Classroom Applications

  1. When wanting to use videos to share content with students, teachers can use this website to embed questions within those videos to ensure students engage them at a cognitive level.
  2. For the final question on a video, teachers can pose a “What did you learn from this video” type question that requires students to summarize the video’s main ideas using their own words.
  3. Teachers can create a project where students make a video about a topic, which could be an interview, a research presentation, an experiment, a documentary, or something else. After creating their video, teachers can have students create a teacher account using this website and then add questions and content to their video. When finished, students can email their teacher the URL for their video and the teacher can post it to a class website. Finally, teachers can have classmates view each other’s videos and complete the questions.
  4. As a review for an upcoming test, teachers can create a video that covers the main topics that will be included on the test.
