Quip – Docs, Chat, Spreadsheets

Quip is an all-purpose app for creating documents, spreadsheets, tables, charts, and more. After launching Quip, users have the option to register with their email. If they do register, users will be able to contact other users, create chat rooms, and invite their contacts to join the chat. From the home screen, users can create new items by tapping the “+” button and choosing if they want to create a document, spreadsheet, chat room, or folder. Plus, if users link to a cloud (e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, Box), they will be able to import items. Once users create an item, they can add text, access additional tools, and stylize it using the options available on the menu located at the bottom of the screen. When users are finished modifying the document, they can tap the “Back” button on the top left of the screen, which returns them to the home screen. Users can then access the item they created in the “Archive” folder. If users want to save the item to their home screen outside of the “Archive” folder, they can tap the “Pin” icon located on the top left of the item’s screen. They can also show other users their work by tapping the “Share” button on the top left of the item’s screen, which will show users the URL for where they can access the item online. Users can then tap the “Upload” button to email, copy, or open the item’s URL. Lastly, from the home screen, users can choose the “+” button and create a new folder. Users can name and stylize the folder to their liking, and then they can add documents, spreadsheets, chat rooms to it and even import

Instructional Ideas

1. When assigning students written work, teachers can have students compose their writing using this app. To turn in their work, teachers can require students to send them the URL to their work via email.
2. For teachers who do bellringer work daily, they can require students to create a “Bellringer” folder in this app and then add a document for each day’s bellringer work. Students can title their document as the day’s date and then complete it. This way, teachers can periodically ask students to open their “Bellringer” folder to check their work.
3. For each instructional unit or type of work (e.g., Test Prep, Notes, Reflections, etc.), teachers can have students create a folder for it using this app. As students complete work, they can organize it by adding it to the corresponding folder.
4. Math and science teachers can use this app to help students organize quantitative data. To do so, teachers can first connect their iPad to a projector, show students a quantitative data set, and then do a “Think Aloud” where they explain to students how they are organizing the data. Next, teachers must give students access to data or have students collect the data. Teachers can then have students create a spreadsheet or table in a document using this app and begin sorting the data. Students can work individually or in pairs. When finished, students can send their teacher the URL, so the teacher can access the spreadsheet.
5. Teachers can encourage creative writing and do a writer’s workshop using this app. To do so, students can start a document and begin writing a short story, narrative essay, or any other type of writing. Students can save their work in this app as they write. When they are ready for feedback, students can share the URL with a teacher or classmate. The person supplying the feedback can then read the writing and insert comments as parentheticals. When finished, the person can send the writing back to its original author by sharing the URL.
