Reading Comprehension Prep: A Best Reading Test Prep App
Summary : Check your reading comprehesion
Reading Comprehension Prep prepares users for standardized reading passages using short fiction and non-fiction texts. Reading Comprehension Prep is a sample of reading passages aligned to the Common Core State Standards for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. When launching Reading Comprehension Prep, users need to tap the “Start Here” menu option. Tapping that button will load the reading passages menu. Users then choose a passage, and they are presented a text and a series of questions. Users are to read the text and answer the questions. If they answer correctly, the screen flashes “correct.” If users answer incorrectly, Reading Comprehension Prep shows them the correct answer and highlights the text in the passage that evidences the correct answer; it does not provide an explanation for why the answer is correct, though. Once users answer all the questions, Reading Comprehension Prep lets them review the questions, the answers they chose, and the correct answers. It also provides them with an overall score. Once finished reviewing their scores, users can then select another passage. Reading Comprehension Prep keeps a running tally of users’ reading comprehension scores that are displayed when selecting a passage.
Please note: This app is meant as a preview of the types of texts and questions available if users purchase the 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade Reading Comprehension Prep app.
Instructional Ideas
- As a class, teachers can use the text and questions to demonstrate reading comprehension strategies. For example, teachers can demonstrate how they analyze a question’s language to determine its question type (e.g., True/False, Chronological, Main Idea, or Inference) or its question-answer relationship (e.g., Right There, Author and Me, Think and Search, or On My Own).
- Once becoming familiar with this app, teachers can assign students to read a text and create questions that are similar to the questions included in this app. Once their questions are created, students can swap questions with a partner and answer their partner’s questions. Students can then swap back and grade their classmate’s work. Finally, students can have a conversation with their classmate about the questions and the answers.
- In preparation for a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade standardized reading test, teachers can use this app as part of their review.
- Because this app keeps a record of students’ best scores for each passage, students can continue reviewing a passage until they all have perfect scores for their grade-level passages.
