SlideShare Presentations

SlideShare allows users to view, save, and share presentations. After launching the app, users must sign via their LinkedIn, Facebook, or SlideShare account. Next, users are presented with a variety of presentation categories they can follow. After selecting different categories, they will appear on the user’s home feed, which can be accessed when launching the app or by tapping the “Home” button on the top of the screen. Users can tap the “Explore” button to view more presentations by the categories they are following or by tapping the “All Categories” button, which allows them to view SlideShare’s categories alphabetically. Users can also enter a search term in the field at the top of the screen to find presentations. When users find a presentation of interest, they can view it by tapping its icon. By swiping sideways, users will be able to view the presentation’s different slides. Users can tap the “Heart” button to like a presentation, the “Save” button to bookmark it for later viewing, and the “Share” button to send it to other users view email and social media. The “You” button takes users to their profile, which lets them access the presentations they saved and liked. Additionally, users can view the presentations they uploaded.

Please Note: Users are not able to upload a presentation to SlideShare from its app. Users must visit SlideShare’s website (www.SlideShare.net) to upload presentations, which can then be accessed in the app.

Instructional Ideas

1. Teachers can have students research a topic by searching this app’s “Home” and “Explore” screens for it using key terms. When students find presentations related to their topic, they can view a sampling of those presentations. Next, students can either list 5-10 new facts or ideas they gained from the presentations or write a paragraph that summarizes the facts and ideas they gained. The list and/or summaries can be written using the Quip, Office Offline, and WPS Office app, and students can email their teacher the work they completed for grading or post it to a class website.
2. After completing a research assignment, students can convert their findings into a presentation and upload it to the SlideShare network. That way, classmates can find and view their resarch.
3. Teachers can instruct students about features that make presentations effective using this app. To do so, teachers can show students a presentation randomly selected from this app. Next, the teacher can lead a class critique of the presentation that analyzes its language, images, spacing, and overall message/impact. Students can then break into small groups and critique another presentation they found in this app using the same criteria previously discussed with the teacher. Finally, each small group can show the class the presentation they viewed and their critique of it.
4. As a friendly class competition, teachers can have students make engaging presentations about a topic they either know well or have researched. Next, students can upload their presentation to the SlideShare website and then track their presentation views in the app. The student who receives the most views after a week, month, or semester is the winner. After the competition ends, teachers can have students write a brief synopsis that explains why they think their presentation was viewed at the rate it was.
