Songwriter’s Pad is a tool to help users create songs. To create a song, users first tap the “Song” button on the top left and enter the song’s working title. Next, users can add text to the song by tapping the “Blocks” button on the top menu and then choosing if they want to add intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, outro, custom, or freestyle lyrics. Users then type the lyrics into the app, and Songwriter’s Pad organizes them. On the side of the main screen, users can add “phrases” and “words” to remember by tapping the “+” button above those areas so they can be remembered for future use. If users have writer’s block, they can tap the “Ideas” button on the top menu and browse words, phrases, and rhymes, or use a dictionary and thesaurus. Users can also add music to their songs using the “Chords” option on the top. When ready to record their song, users can tap the “Microphone” button on the top and Songwriter’s Pad will record them singing their song. When finished, users can share their song by tapping the “layered” button on the right, which allows them to email their song’s lyrics or upload it to their Dropbox.

Instructional Ideas

  1. To teach students the different parts of a song, students can bring in their favorite school-appropriate song. Next, teachers can have them dissect the song by rewriting it into its different blocks—intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, outro—using this app.
  2. After studying a topic, teachers can differentiate their instruction by allowing students to create a song about the topic instead of a traditional paper or presentation.
  3. Teachers can have a class activity in which students are given a certain amount of time—30, 60, or 90 minutes—to draft a song’s lyrics using this app. As part of that time, students must record their song using the app’s “Microphone” feature. Finally, students can present their song by first showing their song’s lyrics to the class, before playing them singing the song for the class. Teachers can also require students to email them their song’s lyrics for accountability. Lyrics can then be copied and pasted to a class website.
  4. Students can rewrite songs, poems, or speeches using this app. To do so, teachers can give students the text to be rewritten and specific instructions, such as replace all the nouns, verbs, or every third word in the text. Students can then rewrite the text by creating a new song using this app, and they can use the in-app “Ideas” feature to help them find words needed to create new lyrics. When finished, students can email their teacher their new text.
