SOS Method: An App for Mindfulness
Summary : Meditative Practices & Well-Being in the Palm of Your Hand!
SOS Method is a subscription-based app (available on the App Store and Google Play) that supports users in developing meditative practices and mindfulness. By offering a series of short videos, SOS Method provides users with ideas, thoughts, and insights into their daily lives and well-being. To organize its content, SOS Method provides three options at the bottom of the screen, and users earn digital badges as they engage the app’s content.
The “Home” option begins with a “Quick Start” feature that provides an overview of the SOS Method’s program along with introductory meditative videos and tools. In addition, users can scroll further topics that include general practices for coping with stress, improving sleep, bettering communication with loved ones, and much more! Users simply tap the heading that interests them and engage the content.
The “Meditation” option includes content that is focused on specific mindsets or practices, and topics include: Ease & Comfort, Easy Breath, and Into the Silence. Users access a piece of content by tapping it and then engaging it.
The “Tools” option includes multiple pieces of content that are divided into subtopics specific to overcoming challenges and life enhancements. The subtopics include tips, advice, and supports for handling a rough day, making space for love, turning dreams into reality, and accessing one’s inner Jedi!
Finally, the “Profile” option includes settings for updating users’ email address, viewing the digital badges they earned, setting a daily reminder, and learning more about the app along with an option for reaching the app’s developers.
Instructional Ideas for SOS Method
- Teachers who are having challenges in the classroom or school community can use this app to re-center themselves before, during, or after school. They can even recommend this app to colleagues who they think would benefit from meditation and mindfulness.
- Guidance counselors can recommend this app to parents/guardians of students who they think may benefit from meditative and mindfulness practices. In fact, guidance counselors who have the support of school administrators and the parents/guardians of students who are using this app could start an after-school club with students to discuss the benefits they have received from it.
- Health teachers who are seeking to learn about meditative practices and mindfulness techniques can use this app for that purpose. As they learn those practices and techniques, they can work with colleagues to bring them into their classroom to support their students’ mental well-being.
