In each of these game modes, users are presented with a 4×4 grid of letters, and they are required to identify words consisting of three to seven letters. In Free Play, users have an unlimited amount of time to find words, Puzzle Mode provides users with blanks for each word located in the grid, and Time Attack gives users a specific amount of time to find words in the grid. As users identify words in the grid, Spell Mania keeps a log of the words found. Additionally, once a word is found, users can tap the word during or after playing the game, and Spell Mania will provide the word’s definition, its synonyms, and the option to share the word over email. Additionally, from the main menu, users can select the profile icon, and Spell Mania will show their statistics for each game mode played.
Instructional Ideas
- Teachers can give students time in class to practice their spelling by using this app. Teachers can add another layer to this activity by having a class contest to see which student can find the most 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, or 7-letter words in a specific amount of time (e.g., 3, 5, or 7 minutes).
- After playing a game, teachers can have students use this app’s definition feature to read a word’s meaning and investigate its synonyms using the built-in thesaurus. Teachers can then assign students to compose a journal entry that uses one of the words found while playing the game and at least three of its synonyms in their entry.
- To have students practice their spelling, teachers can assign students a homework assignment in which they have to find a specific number of 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-letter words while playing the app in its Free Play mode. To prove students found all the letters, teachers can require students to take a screen shot of their statistics page and email it to them.
