Instructional Ideas

  1. While reading a text, teachers can have students look up each word they come across that they do not know using this app. Students can then write the word’s definition directly on the text, or they can make a word log using the UX Documents, Office Offline, or Hanx Writer apps. For each word entered into the log, they can include the word, its definition, and the sentence from the text in which it appeared.
  2. In preparation for an upcoming unit, teachers can give students a vocabulary list, and students can define each term on the list using this app. Additionally, students can create a presentation slide for each word using the PowerPoint, FlowVella, or Haiku Deck apps. On the slide, students can include the word’s definition, an image of the word, and an example sentence that uses the word contextually.
  3. In preparation for a spelling test, teachers can put students in pairs and have them open this app. Next, one student can state a word to his or her partner. The partner can then type the word in this app for spelling practice. Once the word is correctly entered into this app, the student who entered it can ask his or her partner for its meaning. Students can then discuss its spelling and meaning. After the discussion, the students can swap roles and repeat.
  4. Students can enter their word list into the Spelling Notebook Free or Spelling Test Free by FunExam.com apps. They can then practice spelling the words on the list. For each word spelled incorrectly, students can enter it into the Speller app to read its definition and review its spelling. Once comfortable, students can retake the practice spelling test in the Spelling Notebook Free or Spelling Test Free by FunExam.com apps.
