Spelling Bee: A Website for Spelling and Vocabulary
Summary : Bring the National Spelling Bee into Your Classroom!
The Spelling Bee website provides users with a practice spelling and vocabulary test. To access it, users must click the “Take the Test” option on the top of the screen. They will then be presented with information about the Scripps National Spelling Bee. After reading it, users can click the “Test My Spelling Skill” button to launch the test. During the test, users are first presented with spelling questions. As part of the spelling questions, the test provides users with information related to a word (e.g., Language of Origin, Part of Speech, Definition, and a Sentence) and multiple spellings of it. In response, users must choose the correct spelling. For the vocabulary questions, users are presented with a clue about the word’s definition and multiple choices for the word. Based on the clue, users must choose the word correctly from the list. After completing a series of questions, the test provides users with feedback about their performance. Based on their performance, users either advance in the test or their opportunity for advancement ends. If users wish, they can take the test multiple times.
Instructional Ideas
- As part of preparation for a class or school spelling bee, students can complete the “Test My Spelling Skill” feature in this website. Teachers can have students share with them how far they advanced in the test.
- After taking a test and reviewing the words they spelled and/or defined correctly and incorrectly, students can record all the words and keep a log. That way, as they study, students will have a reference point for which words they need to focus on and which words they know.
- Once students understand the format and style of both the spelling and vocabulary questions used by the test, teachers can have students research a certain amount of words (e.g., 5, 10, 15, etc.) and create questions for them that are modeled after the ones used by this website. When finished, students can email their teacher the questions, and the teacher can use them to create a class spelling bee or test.
